On 28 July 1914, the Great War began, and all out war spread across Europe like a cancer. 70 million people were pressed into military service, over the course of four years of fighting. The United States, torn politically, declared neutrality. Many citizens and leaders were Irish or German and insisted that the United States not become involved. There were, however, men and women who disagreed with this policy and crossed the border into Canada to join the Canadian Army to go to France and fight for England.
